The Problem of Species
I was invited to give a lecture to the North Texas Church
of Freethought on the subject of evolution, and I chose to return to the Problem of Species,
which I've talked about before on the podcast.
Essentially, the ways in which we have historically attempted to distinguish one species from another (typology, morphology, etc.) are not perfect. Not even sexual isolation is without exception, as we know from countless instances of hybridization between various species. A further problem is the existence of ring species, which are either groups of geographically continuous subspecies, or the divergent evolution of members of a diverse species population. Ultimately, these problems trouble us because as humans, we prefer to think of reality as composed of discontinuous entities and concepts, while science (particularly biological science) continues to show us that many concepts intersect with each other as in a continuum. The concept of species is such, and reflects what Richard Dawkins refers to as "the tyranny of the discontinuous mind."
